Here’s What Reportedly Occurred

According to NBC 2 News and Weather, a Bombardier Challenger 600 jet was traveling over Florida from Ohio. The outlet reports that the jet was carrying five people when it crashed on the I-75 interstate highway.

The crash reportedly occurred in Naples, Florida, around 3:15 p.m. near the Golden Gate Parkway exit.

By 4:40 p.m., authorities had confirmed that at least two people were killed in the collision while three people survived, per NBC 2 News and Weather. At this time, it appears that the identities of the victims have not been released publicly.

According to the outlet, the Naples Airport Tower was in contact with the jet before it landed. Moments before, the pilot could reportedly be heard calling in an emergency.

NBC 2 News and Weather reports that the pilot informed Air Traffic Control that the jet “lost both engines” and “would not be able to make it” to Naples Airport.

Here’s How Authorities Have Responded Thus Far

The outlet reports that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has closed a “large section” of the highway where the crash occurred. Traffic on both the southbound and northbound lanes has reportedly been closed, per NBC 2 News and Weather.

Additionally, the outlet reports that the Federal Aviation Administration has reported that the area will remain closed for 24 hours. Drivers are now being advised to find alternate routes.

“The Federal Aviation Administration has closed a large section of Interstate 75 in Collier County to investigate the crash of an aircraft with two confirmed fatalities… The Collier County Sheriff’s Office and FHP are assisting with traffic and the security of the scene. We are also working with the FAA to determine when some lanes can re-open to traffic in the affected area. Please use alternate routes highlighted in this graphic if you need to travel,” a Facebook post recently shared by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office reads.
According to Fox 35 Orlando, the FAA is investigating the fatal crash alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
